About Us

Restoring Takarunga Hauraki Charitable Trust (RTH) is a community-led ecological restoration and outdoor biodiversity education programme, in the context of working collaboratively to solve the ecological and climate crisis. We work to enhance and protect the unique biodiversity and ecosystems of the peninsula and surrounding areas by eradicating animal and plant pests, restoring native plants and wildlife, and organising conservation and eco-literacy education initiatives. We aim to integrate biculturalism and Tīkanga Māori practices into everything we do. Community volunteers power all aspects of our teamwork.

Contract role summary:

The Pest Free Peninsula Lead role works collaboratively and creatively alongside RTH volunteers, community partners and staff to control and eradicate pest animals (rats, possums, and mustelids) from urban wildlife havens, pest-free eco-corridors and key “halo” neighbourhoods.

Desired skills and experience:

To successfully fill this role, you will be a self-starter, community-oriented, have strong organisational skills and be confident in working strategically alongside a professional team and volunteers. You will provide key leadership and inspiration for this vital RTH workstream. Technical knowledge/skills for pest animal control, data systems management, and ecological restoration are generally needed but could be part of the onboarding process of working with lead volunteers and collaborating professionals.  Your creativity, enthusiasm and innovation would make a big difference to local volunteers and native wildlife. This is an ongoing multi-year position with the contract usually rolling over.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion and work to accomplish our evolving Pest Free Peninsula strategic plan.

  • Maintain and strengthen the volunteer Pest Free Peninsula project teams.

  • Coordinate regular educational and skill-building workshops and events for volunteers and potential volunteers (e.g. trapper socials, street parties, network meetings, volunteer celebrations, or informal meetups).

  • Use technology effectively to record data, manage reporting processes and team communications.

  • Encourage community-based tracking and facilitate analysis of pest animal population changes.

  • Use trapping data to communicate and inspire further participation in PFP projects and teamwork.

  • Acquire any needed animal control and eradication skills and knowledge needed to inspire others, including data collection systems (e.g. Trap.NZ and the RTH Microsoft 365)

Why Join Us?

  • Work with a supportive and passionate volunteer community and work team.

  • Benefit from a flexible working environment.

  • Make a positive impact on native ecosystems and our community.
